Chaling Ancient City Wall

Chaling Ancient City Wall is located in Chaling County, Zhuzhou City, Hunan Province. As a famous folk saying goes in Hunan: “We have ancient city wall in Chaling and Town God’s Temple in Anren”. The former refers to the relics of the ancient city of Chaling in the Southern Song Dynasty which is the only well-preserved stone city of the Song Dynasty in Hunan while the latter no longer exists.


In recent years, Chaling County has strengthened the protection and development of the ancient city by investing in the restoration of 484-meter-long city wall, the construction of Yingxiang Gate Tower, turrets and other scenic spots. In 2004, it was rated as one of the “100 Sights of Hunan”.


The top of the ancient city wall offers panoramic views of the clear Mishui River, towering Yunyang Mountain and other green hills around the city. And a 500-meter-long ancient street in good condition stretches from Ziwei Gate Tower, flanked by traditional dwellings of the Qing Dynasty and some ancient workshops. Various sounds like yelling, clattering and drumming fill the air.
