It was established in the first year of the Emperor Hongwu’s reign of the Ming Dynasty, with a history of more than 600 years. It still retains Miao and Tujia farming customs to this day. There are more than 50 well-preserved ancient wooden stilted buildings.

In December 2018, Nanmuya Ancient Village was listed in the fifth batch of traditional Chinese villages.
