Mao Zedong, chairman of People’s Republic of China from 1949 to 1976, has made great contribution to the development of Marxism-Leninism, military theories, and the Communist Party of China, together known as Mao Zedong Thought. As the fruit of sinicization of Marxism, Mao Zedong Thought is the guiding ideology of the Communist Party of China and the precious intellectual treasure of Chinese people.
His major articles have been collected into the Selected Works of Mao Zedong, and other published works include Selected Works of Mao Tsetung Poems, Mao Zedong’s Rural Survey and so on.
Chairman Mao is regarded as the most important figures in the modern world history and one of the 100 most influential people of the 20th century named by the Time magazine.
He had three sons and two daughters, among whom the eldest son died in the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea.
The Former Residence of Chairman Mao, located at Shaoshan Village, Shaoshan Township, covers a construction area of 472.92 square meters and a floor area of 566.39 square meters with a total of 18 rooms, where Chairman Mao spent his unforgettable youth.

This farmhouse faces north and its civil structure looks like Chinese character “凹”. Above the door of the hall hangs a gold wooden plaque inscribed by Deng Xiaoping in 1983, “The Former Residence of Chairman Mao,” and indoors there are many household utensils used by Chairman Mao on display.

The Former Residence of Chairman Mao, known as the national key cultural relic protection unit, is surrounded by luxuriant hills and embraced by clear water. Every summer the lotus flowers in the pond in front of the house scent the air and the breeze ruffles the lake. A large stretch of rice field dominates the south bank and the sheaves ripple and shimmer like waves of green, painting a beautiful pastoral scene.

As the hometown of Mao Zedong, Shaoshan City is abundant in cultural and natural resources. It is home to the famous Shaoshan Scenic Spot, which boasts various cultural and natural tourist attractions, including Mao Zedong's Former Residence, Sculpture of Mao Zedong, Comrade Mao Zedong Memorial Hall, Shaoshan Mao Zedong Memorial Museum, Shaoshan Dishuidong (Dripping Water Cave), and Heishizhai Scenic Spot.
