The making of Fanhuang bamboo carving requires not only superb modeling skills, but also rigorous picture design and excellent carving techniques. The three together form the overall artistic characteristics of Shaoyang Fanhuang bamboo carving.
Among them, carving techniques are particularly important, including line carving, relief carving, Yinwen carving, Yangwen carving, colored carving, inlay carving, etc, and Yinwen carving is the most distinctive one. Borrowing from Chinese painting techniques, artists paint the drawing with knives instead of brushes and combine a variety of knife techniques to create a well-designed picture of reality and fantasy, forming a unique style.
There are varieties of carved bamboo ware, like boxes, baskets, vases, bamboo frames, large hanging screens and other decorations, with patterns of figures, flowers, birds, landscapes, etc. As Fanhuang bamboo carving has absorbed the epigraphic painting skills of traditional Chinese paintings, the related exquisite products which feature the oriental art are exported to more than 70 countries and regions such as Japan, Europe and the United States. In 1915, the lotus leaf vase created with Shaoyang Fanhuang bamboo carving won the silver prize at the Panama Pacific International Exposition.
