Miao’s folk songs in Xiangxi, Hunan Province, the most popular art form of singing among Miao people, are known for the simplicity and straightforwardness, even without accompaniment. Faced with the whole world, the self, labor and lovers, people sing whatever they feel in their hearts without hiding anything.

These songs depict the twists and turns that Miao people underwent, as well as simple aesthetic interest and pure feelings. The songs serve as a good way for Miao people to express rich and colorful content that not only reflects their aesthetic thinking of nature, society and life, but also embodies their aesthetic consciousness and points of view.

Chen Qianjun, born in October 1943, is regarded as the most representative, authoritative and influential figure active at the grass-roots level of the Hunan intangible cultural heritage project “Miao’s Folk Songs in Xiangxi”. He excels at varieties of songs such as custom songs, love songs and life songs, which convey romance by vivid metaphors and lucid words.
