Development of Hunan's cultural and tourism industry in past decade

During the past decade, new breakthroughs have been made in artistic creation. Around the topics of the completion of a moderately prosperous society in all aspects and the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China, Hunan has created more than 140 new large-scale outstanding plays. Among them, “Ode to the Earth" and "Peach Blossom and Misty Rain" were selected as the 12 stage plays recommended by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism for precise poverty alleviation.
In the past decade, culture and tourism have become new indicators of people's well-being. 123 counties, districts and cities in Hunan have fully completed the three-year action plan for the construction of a modern public cultural service system, with an excellent rate of 53%. The completion rate of the construction of county libraries and cultural center branch system was 138% and 127% respectively.

Over the past decade, tourism has become a new engine of economic growth. Hunan now boasts 2 world natural heritage sites, 2 global geoparks, 7 demonstration areas for all-for-one tourism, 11 5A scenic areas and 151 4A scenic areas. Hunan’s total revenue of tourism has grown at an average annual rate of 19.3% in the past decade.
During the past decade, new progress has been made in the protection, utilization and inheritance of cultural heritage. Hunan has become one of the ten largest provinces of cultural heritage in China, with 5 national archaeological site parks, 39 national historical and cultural cities and towns, and 658 traditional Chinese villages. Four items, namely the Kunqu Opera, customs of the Dragon Boat Festival in the Miluo River, Hunan shadow puppetry and the Twenty-four Solar Terms (Miao’s Ganqiu Festival and Anren’s Ganfenshe Festival), have been inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Moreover, there are 137 representative items of China’s Intangible Cultural Heritage.

During the past decade, the red tourism brand of "the hometown of great figures" has been upgraded. In Hunan there are 310 red tourist attractions, including 28 national classic red tourist attractions and 57 national A-class tourist attractions. Last year, the number of red tourism visitors in Hunan exceeded 140 million, an increase of 25% year on year, and the comprehensive income topped 130 billion yuan, an increase of 28% year on year.
In the past decade, culture and tourism have become new force for the opening-up and development of Hunan. The tourism branding project has been implemented. For example, the tourism image film of “the hometown of Chairman Mao -- Beautiful Hunan” was launched and various branded cultural and tourism festivals were held every year. In addition, Hunan was selected as one of the “Top 10 destinations in the world” by Lonely Planet.
Over the past decade, culture and tourism have become new driving force for poverty eradication and rural revitalization. Hunan has seen a total of more than one million people lifted out of poverty, accounting for about 20% of its poverty population based on 2015. 41% of the model villages for poverty eradication in Hunan are key villages for tourism poverty alleviation.
