Huaihua is located between the Wuling Mountains and the Xuefeng Mountains. The Yuanshui River runs through the whole city from south to north. There are many rivers and streams, abundant rainfall, and a suitable climate. Therefore, Huaihua has the natural ecological environment advantages of planting and producing high-quality Chinese medicinal materials.
It has a long history of planting uncaria. And Tongdao County is the main production area of uncaria. The uncaria industry, with the planting area of 60,000 mu (4,000 hectares), the annual output of 3,000 tons, and the annual output value of about 200 million yuan, has become a pillar industry for local farmers to increase income.
In recent years, Huaihua has highlighted the development of its six Chinese herbs (poria cocos, rhizoma polygonati, gastrodia elata, LongyaLilium, Wild Honeysuckle Flower and caulis sinomenii) as well as the other characteristic varieties, and strived to build a high-quality traditional Chinese medicine base in Southern China.
At present, most of the main varieties of Chinese medicinal materials in Huaihua have won their national honors, which is of great significance for the promotion of high-quality development of the Chinese medicine industry in Huaihua.
