‘Immortal Heroine Yang Kaihui’ staged in Hunan

The drama is a creative project of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the CPC. It consists of five chapters. Starring Han Zaifen, the famous Huangmei Opera artist, it showcases Yang Kaihui’s love for life and pursuit of truth in her life through traditional Huangmei Opera styles and modern narrative techniques.
On the evening of July 2, actors of the theatre also presented another Huangmei opera “Female Consort Prince” at Hunan Grand Theatre, which tells the story of Feng Suzhen, a woman who pretends to be a man in order to participate in the imperial examination and meet the emperor to save her imprisoned fiance.
Huangmei Opera is one of the five major types of traditional Chinese opera, known as the “most beautiful rural music in China”. It has distinct regional characteristics and rich expressive power, with simple singing and diverse performance forms.
In recent years, Anhui Zaifen Huangmei Opera Art Theatre has rehearsed several classic opera works such as “Female Consort Prince” and “A Goddess’ Marriage”, and created large-scale new plays such as “Immortal Heroine Yang Kaihui”, “Huizhou’s Women”, and “Deng Jiaxian”, which are deeply loved by audiences.
During the event, cultural workers from the two provinces had discussions and exchanges around the protection and inheritance of local opera, interactive performance, artistic creation, and talent cultivation. From July 30 to 31, two excellent Huagu opera pieces of Hunan will be staged in Anhui.
