On a sunny day in April, explore the clashing and jostling of traditions and fads in Chaozong Street, as if one traveled to the good old days of Changsha City.
With every walk, hours creep by ever more slowly.
As one of the three extant granite-paved streets in Changsha, Chaozong Street, lined with renovated shops, is infused with the clacking of heels and bright sunlight, bathed in which chat the locals.
Classic beauty frames the street with uniform three-story buildings, vermilion wooden doors, granite lintels, carved windows, and compact balconies.
The further you go, the richer the modern flavor.
Mr. Liu, one of the first entrepreneurs who ventured into Chaozong Street, opened a bar named “Bar Fable” with his friends at the block’s entrance in 2019. The saloon is tastefully furnished with rows of wooden drawers which are normally seen in shops of traditional Chinese medicine.
In the daytime, Western food is offered by the bar, including hamburgers, spaghetti, and milkshakes, while on the dinner menu are an assortment of cocktails, whisky, and snacks as the highlight is the exclusive band performance which is popular with youngsters.

Through the French window of the bar “Jungle”, one may feel part of a tropical island with beaches, coconut palms, and pink sunglow everywhere.

Visitors will be richly rewarded with hotels, bars, milk tea stores, and Japanese restaurants when going down the alley where young people look at home with a bottle of tea or liquor in their hands.
Through the French window of the bar “Jungle”, one may feel part of a tropical island with beaches, coconut palms, and pink sunglow everywhere.
The packed house is owned by Mr. Chen, Generation Z, who had his eye on Chaozong Street at once for opening a shop after working in Shenzhen City for years. Half a year later, Mr. Chen gets such a big business that reservations and sometimes waiting are necessary for a seat.
While Chaozong Street displays a slow-paced lifestyle by day, it pulses with energy by night.

At 9 p.m., the eatery “clos59” at No.59 Chaozong Street has just opened. Men and women dressed in trendy clothes and polished leather shoes step on the ancient bluestone and enter this French wine and dining restaurant. The owner is a Changsha girl who brought the rich French culture to the old street when she married a young heir from a traditional winery in France during her Ph.D. studies.
A game is offered in the restaurant. Based on a brief comment on the blind tasting card for each wine, which includes 12 red, white, rosé, and natural wines, participants blind taste three wines and guess them correctly for a prize.
If you ask which time is most exciting for Chaozong Street’s night market, the answer is: from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. the next day.
