It vividly showcases the milestone cultural evolution events occurred in Hunan since 500,000 years ago through painting art for the first time, and presents the cultural achievements of Hunan ancestors in the great historical process of Chinese civilization.
Hunan is one of the most important birthplaces of ancient Chinese civilization, and the Liyang Plain in the northwest of Dongting Lake is also the most developed prehistoric cultural area in Hunan. The Hunan Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology has excavated more than ten important prehistoric cultural sites in this area, including Pengtoushan, Tangjiagang, and Chengtoushan, and established the most complete prehistoric archaeological cultural sequence in Hunan.

It’s necessary to integrate archaeological research and tourism product development, reproduce the charm of agricultural culture, enhance tourist experience, and form world-class agricultural cultural tourism brands.
In order to strengthen the protection and inheritance of prehistoric cultural heritage in the province, and bring cultural heritage to life, in 2023, the Hunan Provincial Cultural Relics Bureau and the Hunan Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology organized a group of painters to create a long traditional Chinese scroll painting featuring the process of prehistoric social civilization in Hunan with the Liyang Plain as the core.
The scroll painting, consisting of six parts, is 120 meters long and 1.8 meters high, which can be regarded as a masterpiece in the Hunan painting circle.

The artists have painted the astonishing legend of Hunan ancestors who leaped from primitive lifestyles to the threshold of civilization in prehistoric human history through artistic expression techniques that combine realism and romanticism, as well as concretization and imagery.
