Hunan sees two natural reserves on IUCN’s Green List

Recently, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) announced that the Green List of the IUCN would be updated, and 11 Chinese nature reserves were included on the list, such as Huangguoshu Waterfall Scenic Area and Shennongjia National Park. Hunan saw Huping Mountain National Nature Reserve and Badagong Mountain National Nature Reserve on the list.



The list released during the second phase of the COP15 included 18 natural reserves, 11 of which are in China, three in Mexico, two in Peru, one in France and one in Zambia. So far, there have been 77 nature reserves on the Green List of the IUCN.

James Hardcastle, a senior official at the IUCN, said that China has invested in thousands of nature reserves and accumulated rich experience. The international community can learn and exchange these experiences for common benefits. The Green List of IUCN is a global campaign aimed at successfully protecting nature. It will certify natural reserves that are “effectively managed, fairly governed, and have a long-term positive impact on human beings and nature” according to strict standards applicable to the world.
