2023-04-11

It includes a Jiangtou Tea exhibition and marketing conference, a tea picking competition, a symposium on Jiangtou Tea brand strategy and industrial development, a signing ceremony, a Jiangtou Tea intangible heritage exhibition, and a Jiangtou Tea short video show, in a bid to promote the integration of agriculture, culture and tourism in Leiyang City.
Leiyang City, the hometown of Cai Lun who is conventionally regarded as the Chinese inventor of paper, got its name from the ancient tale of Shennong inventing the plow (“Lei” in Chinese). With a balmy climate, unique soil and heavy mist, the city is home to Jiangtou Tea, one of “Leiyang Four Treasures”.
In recorded history, Jiangtou Tea was first planted in the Qin Dynasty and hailed as a tribute tea during the Tang and Song dynasties for its refreshing taste and lingering fragrance. It is now inscribed on the Intangible Cultural Heritage list of Hengyang City.

In recent years, Leiyang City has been fostering tea-related tourism with improved tea varieties and ecological tea gardens. To this end, growers inject modern technology into traditional techniques to raise brand awareness of Jiangtou Tea. Now, the city boasts tourist towns with 12,000 mu (800 hectares) of tea plantations, producing 520 tons of tea a year worth more than 280 million yuan.
Many of its tea companies have their tea production certified organic while leading tea enterprises have established strategic cooperation with the Tea Research Institute of Hunan Academy of Agricultural Sciences and Hunan Agricultural University.
Moreover, there are 33 patents and multiple famous brands like Hujiayuan in the local tea industry, receiving prestigious gold awards for four consecutive years in the “Tea Ancestor Shennong Cup” tea competition at the Hunan Tea Expo.
The tea industry is growing into a green pillar industry concerning the bread and butter of the Leiyang people.
