According to ancient books, the emperor would lead officials to the southern suburbs to welcome summer and hold a grand ceremony to worship Emperor Yan and Zhu Rong around the Start of Summer.
Spring tea ceremony, as a traditional tea event held in Nanyue to worship ancestors and pray for a bountiful year, has been held since 2007. The rich and colorful tea art has been preserved and the profound tea culture has been inherited.
In 2013, Nanyue Tea Ceremony was selected as a city-level intangible cultural heritage item, and one of the top ten tea cultural events in Hunan Province.
Representatives of 11 tea companies in the city swore to further promote the craftsmanship spirit, innovate processing techniques, improve tea quality and protect Nanyue Yunwu Tea brand.

Nanyue Yunwu Tea has been listed as a tribute since the Tang Dynasty. In recent years, it has been awarded the titles of one of the “top ten tea public brands” and “top ten famous teas” in Hunan Province. It has also been selected in the “Centennial Famous Tea List” edited by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs.
Now, there are 16 tea plantations in Nanyue, with a total planting area of 10,800 mu (720 hectares). The annual tea production is about 220 to 250 tons, and the annual sales revenue reaches about 100 million yuan. It’s one of the pillar industries to enrich the local people.
