Ancient Town of Fenghuang

The Ancient Town of Fenghuang, built in 1556, is adjacent to such famous scenic spots as Dehang Miao Village in Jishou, Mengdong River in Yongshun and Fanjing Mountain in Guizhou Province. It connects Huaihua, Jishou in Hunan Province and Tongren in Guizhou Province. As one of the top ten cultural heritage sites in Hunan Province, it was highly praised as the most beautiful small city in China by a New Zealand writer Louis Eli. It enjoys equal popularity with the Old Town of Lijiang in Yunnan Province and Pingyao Ancient City in Shanxi Province. This national historical and cultural town is renowned as a national 4A scenic area . In October 2019, it was selected as one of the aesthetic small towns.

Tuojiang Stilted Buildings
Tuojiang Stilted Buildings

The stilted buildings are located in Huilong Pavilion in the southeast of the Ancient Town of Fenghuang, which face ancient roads in the front and hang on the Tuojiang River in the back. They belong to the ancient building groups with great Miao architectural characteristics in the Ancient Town of Fenghuang. With a total length of 240 meters, they were built in the Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China. Today, over ten households still live here.

Chaoyang Palace, also known as Chen Ancestral Temple, is a masterpiece of ancestral temple. It is the most complete modern pseudo-classic architecture in the Ancient Town of Fenghuang. Famous couplets are hung on both sides of the ancient stage. The entire palace is regarded as a fine example in architecture with its beautiful and fine eaves, tiles and cornices.
Qiliang Cave
Qiliang Cave

Qiliang Cave, situated in the north of the Ancient Town of Fenghuang, is a carbonate cave. It integrates mountains, rivers, valleys, beaches, cliffs, waterfalls, jungles, gardens and villages, with such five scenic spots in the cave as “Ancient Battlefield”, “Gallery”, “Paradise”, “Dragon Palace” and “Yinyang River”. Its entrance measures more than 50 meters high and over 20 meters wide. A stream with gentle flow passes through the cave. The cave is decorated with colorful neon lights on stalagmites, stone curtains and stone flowers.
