Banban Dragon Lantern is popular in Longtanhe, Hometown of Chinese Folk Art, awarded by the Ministry of Culture. Originated in the Northern Song Dynasty, it is said to be a civil activity to commemorate General Lei Wanchun, a hero suppressing bandits. The activity expresses the people’s joy for peace and prosperity and their desire for good harvests.

As a treasure of the Tujia people in western Hunan, Banban Dragon Lantern is also the most characteristic folk culture in Cili after a thousand-year inheritance and development. It was included in Hunan Provincial Intangible Cultural Heritage List in 2006. Banban Dragon Lantern is the grandest performance of the Lantern Festival in Longtanhe, involving dozens to hundreds or even thousands of people. The dance has become a business card of Longtanhe’s economy and culture.
