Zhangjiajie City Museum, which was officially opened to the public for free on September 2, 2016, is a comprehensive geological museum integrating Zhangjiajie geology and geomorphology, history and culture, and urban construction planning.

With an area of nearly 7,000 square meters, there are three exhibition halls: Zhangjiajie Geological Exhibition Hall, Zhangjiajie Historical and Cultural Center, and Zhangjiajie Urban Planning Exhibition Hall.

There are 10,344 pieces (sets) of collections, including 617 pieces (sets) of national level three or above precious cultural relics.

The museum is composed of Geological Exhibition Hall, Historical and Cultural Center and Urban Planning Exhibition Hall.

Geological Exhibition Hall

On the first floor is Geological Exhibition Hall, which mainly reveals the local scientific connotation, unique value and related geological knowledge of Zhangjiajie landform, a representative local tourism resource. It consists of Preface Hall, Earth Hall, Zhangjiajie Landform Hall, Prehistoric Biological Evolution Hall, Ecological Protection and Glory Zhangjiajie Hall, and Multimedia Film and Television Hall. It displays the features of Zhangjiajie landform, paleontological fossils represented by Furong Dragon, and diverse biological specimens known as the Asian Gene Bank.




Historical and Cultural Exhibition Hall

The second floor is History and Culture Exhibition Hall, which collects precious cultural relics with important historical, scientific, artistic, and folk values that have been excavated, collected and donated by the city over the years. It demonstrated to the audience the outstanding intangible cultural heritage of Zhangjiajie City, such as Sangzhi folk songs, Zhangjiajie Yangxi Opera, hard Qigong, Maogusi dance and so on.

Zhangjiajie is an ancient and magical land where the spectacle of quartz sandstone peaks and forests began to grow as early as 380 million years ago and human activities started as early as 200,000 years ago.

From the pre-Qin period to the Qin and Han dynasties, to the later dynasties in history, the history and culture had continued and been passed down.

The Tujia, Bai, Miao, Hui, Han and other ethnic groups live and coexist here, and the ethnic culture is colorful. The Second Front Army of the Chinese Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army was born here. Revolutionaries such as He Long, Ren Bishi, and Guan Xiangying, led people in Zhangjiajie to fight for democracy and freedom at here.


Historical and Cultural Exhibition Hall is divided into three parts: Zhangjiajie Story, Safeguarding Our Spiritual Homeland and Hundred Years of Memory, which respectively records the historical development process of Zhangjiajie since the beginning of human activities.




Urban Planning Exhibition Hall

Urban Planning Exhibition Hall on the third floor shows the fruitful achievements of urban planning and construction since the establishment of Zhangjiajie. The exhibition in the hall adpots modern science and technologies such as 4D cinema, audio guide system, maglev globe, phantom imaging technology, 270 degrees image space show. The 360 degrees museum, which can be viewed on the Internet, brings a unique audio-visual experience to the audience.

Urban Planning Exhibition Hall mainly showcases the achievements of urban planning and construction of Zhangjiajie in six perspectives: Zhangjiajie’s Achievement, Interpretation of Zhangjiajie, Prospect of Zhangjiajie, and Urban Memory. With the theme of “Zhangjiajie in the World”, the planning hall is laid out in a chronological order, striving to interpret the past, present and future of Zhangjiajie.


The exhibition hall is designed to show Zhangjiajie’s vitality, original ecology, and unique characteristics, highlight its inimitable resource advantages, and reflect the inclusiveness and internationalism of urban planning and construction.


Opening Hours:


Every day from 9:00 am to 16:30 pm (no ticket at 15:30 and no admission at 16:00), Mondays closed

It is open all year round free of charge.
