Shigu Academy

Shigu Academy is located on Shigu Mountain where the rivers of Zheng, Xiang and Lei converge in the north of Hengyang City, Hunan Province. Built in the year of 810 A.D. (in the Tang Dynasty), it is one of the important cradles of Huxiang culture. It is known as one of the four major academies in ancient China, together with Songyang Academy, Bailudong Academy and Yuelu Academy.


Shigu Academy is mainly composed of Wuhou Temple, Li Zhongjie Temple, Daguan Building, Qixian Temple, Jingye Hall, Hejiang Pavilion and other buildings, covering a total area of about 4,000 square meters.


It is the earliest academy that was privately founded in ancient China. It is now the traditional culture and education base of Hengyang City. Educational school trips, performances, sacrifices and other activities are regularly organized here. In 2016, Shigu Academy was rated as a national 4A tourist attraction.
