Yongzhou is located in the south of Hunan Province, with a total land area of 22,400 square kilometers and a population of 6.45 million, ranking second and fourth in the province respectively. It’s a national historical and cultural city, a national health city and a national forest city.
Yongzhou, as a beautiful landscape city, is famous for many sites of historic and cultural interest. Yuxi, Wuxi and Lianxi are three famous streams in this city. Amazing scenery can be enjoyed in Mount Emperor Shun, Mount Yangming and Mount Jiuyi.
Yongzhou, known as Lingling in ancient times, is one of the 34 ancient places that appeared before the Xia Dynasty. With a history of more than 2,200 years, it’s one of the four major national historic cultural cities in the province. It’s the cradle of Shun culture, Liu culture, Neo-Confucianism culture, Nvshu culture and Yao culture, becoming an important source of Huxiang culture and even Chinese culture.
It’s the birthplace of historical celebrities such as Huang Gai, Huai Su, Zhou Dunyi, He Shaoji and Tang Shengzhi as well as proletarian revolutionaries like Li Da, Tao Zhu, Jiang Hua and He Baozhen. The red armies passed through 10 counties in Yongzhou during the Long March, and left the heroic story of Chen Shuxiang, commander of the No.34 Division of the Red Army.
Yongzhou is a green city suitable to live and work in. It has many ecological titles such as National Ecological Civilization Pilot Demonstration Area for Xiangjiang River Source Area and National Forest City. 8 counties have been included in the national ecological areas, and 3 counties won the title of National Demonstration City for Ecological Civilization Construction.
Now, there are 10 national forest parks, 4 national nature reserves, 9 national wetland parks, and more than 15,333 square kilometers of forest land in the whole city. The city’s forest coverage rate is 65.3%. The air quality rate is about 100% throughout the year, reaching the national air quality standard. Besides, the surface water environmental quality ranks top 20 among prefecture-level and above cities in China, and first in the province.

In the 14th Five-Year Plan of Hunan Province and Long-Range Objectives Outline for 2035, Yongzhou is positioned as a national regional comprehensive transportation hub city, and its transportation status has been greatly improved. Relying on the advantages of good location and policies, the city has achieved remarkable results in open development.
