Located in the northwest of Hunan Province, Zhangjiajie is in the hinterland of Wuling Mountains. It covers a total area of 9,516 square kilometers, with the jurisdiction over 2 districts and 2 counties. According to the seventh national census, the permanent population of the city reached 1.52 million.
Tourism is the foundation of the city. The 264.6 square kilometer Wulingyuan Scenic Area known for unique landscape of quartz sandstone canyon, is composed of four parts: Zhangjiajie Forest Park which is China’s first national forest park, Tianzi Mountain Nature Reserve, Suoxiyu Nature Reserve and Yangjiajie Scene. Splendid and distinctive, it is included in the first batch of world Natural Heritage lists, first batch of geological parks in the world, and first batch of 5A national tourist attractions.
Ethnic scenic spots such as Tujia Ethnic Folk Garden, Xiuhua Mountain Hall and performances like Charming Xiangxi Show will expose you to the traditional customs and culture of ethnic minorities like Tujia, Bai and Miao.
At present, the city has built 12 national tourist areas, including one 5A level and five 4A level. With the improvement of transportation and service facilities the tourist reception capacity has reached 36,200 people a day.
Zhangjiajie is an area inhabited by ethnic minorities. There are 33 ethnic minorities, mainly Tujia, Bai and Miao, with a population of 1.1525 million, accounting for 77.19% of the total population. It boasts more than 70 types of intangible cultural heritage in 15 categories, including Sangzhi folk songs, Zhangjiajie Yangxi, Zhangjiajie Gaohuadeng, Cili Dragon Dance and Zhangjiajie Qigong.
Zhangjiajie is also an old revolutionary base. It is the central area of Western Hunan and Hubei revolutionary base and Hunan, Hubei, Sichuan and Guizhou revolutionary base, where the proletarian revolutionists like He Long, Ren Bishi, Wang Zhen, Guan Xiangying and Xiao Ke struggled for eight years during the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression.
Since its establishment, Zhangjiajie city has sped up the development of tourism industry by improving infrastructure and strengthening the basic work. So far, it has achieved the goal of building Zhangjiajie into a well-known tourist resort at home and abroad.
